Best Practices in Volunteer Management: Assessing Your Organization's Needs
(Continuing Education)

New to Volunteer Management? Need some fresh ideas? This workshops offers a basic understanding of best practices in volunteer management. It is presented in an interactive format, and participants will learn about core competencies and how to get a volunteer program on track. There will be an opportunity to discuss the particular needs of your organization during the training.

Presenters: Carmela Vetri is a recently retired Senior Program Officer from American Councils for International Education. She received her M.A. in International Relations and Economics from Johns Hopkins SAIS. Carmela spent her career working with U.S. Department of State funded youth exchange programs. These programs are merit based scholarships for teens 15-17, to promote public diplomacy efforts put forth by the U.S. government. She has recruited and trained hundreds of volunteer scholarship evaluators annually for more than 20 years. She has worked closely with volunteers over the years to create high retention rates and overall volunteer satisfaction. In addition to managing volunteers, she has been involved in many volunteer activities, including tutoring, fundraising, and serving as a chair for Adams Morgan neighborhood events.

Megan Timmens is a Librarian at Calvert Library, Twin Beaches Branch. She has a M.A. in International Education from The George Washington University. After volunteering for American Councils for International Education, she worked as the Volunteer Coordinator at the organization for four years. She supervised the day to day operations of the scholarship evaluation process, managing more than 270 volunteers who read approximately 7,000 scholarship applications each year. Megan is a returned Peace Corps Volunteer (Kazakhstan, 2003-2005). There she trained an all volunteer staff for an English Language Library at Pavlodar State University. She is a current member of the Rotary Club in Prince Frederick and organizes book donations to Books for International Goodwill.
